What’s your power output per liter of displacement? I’m at 143.75 per litre in the ST (230HP/1.6L) and 21.6 in the truck (call it 80HP/3.7L).

A Hellcat engine comes in at 128.5 per liter.

1990s-era engine, not forced induction. Blown engines often get excluded from these comparisons because you can crank them up to whatever you want....for a while!

Power per liter is a horrible obsolete way of measuring engine efficiency.

should go with some kind of power per physical dimension

HP/litre makes no sense unless you use effective displacement (displacement * ( pe ak boost in bars+1) ). Otherwise, smallest motor with highest boost will always win, no matter how poorly designed.

i.e. an 82 Honda CX500T made 200 HP/litre, while being pr etty damned basic.

10/17/2018 at 13:16

Kinja'd!!!0

The short answer is: It depends. There’s really no way to measure how good an engine is full stop. Many parameters are in mind. Maybe you want to see how fast the engine can gather and loose power, and that could make it horribly inefficient in terms of fuel consumption, but it’d make for a fun car!

You’d need to have the engine on a dyno on it’s own in order to get real consumption. You’d plug (as I put in the other comment)

Power in kW

Time elapsed in seconds

Energy of fuel in MJ/KG

Consumption of fuel in KG

Engineers use Brake Specific Fuel Consumption, it’s a 3D graph and much because you could use different engine RPM ranges.

In that regard using torque per litre could be the best way to compare them as far as how *good* an engine is.

Like, diesel engines are typically more efficient in a BSFC chart, and casually diesel engines tend to have more torque per litre.

But Diesel engines make less power typically than a similarly sized gasoline combustion engine... and power is the fun stuff!

If we're talking about power to the wheels I'm at 40hp per liter. But she's rated at 66hp per liter.

I think if we multiply (horsepower)(mpg)(vehicle weight) we would have an arbitrary number relative to power and efficiency, obviously maximum horsepower is not used to achieve the fuel economy rating.

I switched to sane units. My car has the capability of 1.416x10^7 kW*km*kg/L or 1.416x10^13 W*m*kg/L

km / Liter makes more sense. I want to know how far I can travel on 1 unit of fuel.

Ranger 143/2.3L=62.17

BMW 325es 121/2.7L=44.81

Kawasaki KL250G 26/.25=104

Yes my sporty car does have less horsepower then my truck.

83.75 hp/L

It’s a 201 HP 2.4L 4 banger

I’d also like to point out that it makes more power than the new Chevy Blazer

Does the Speed6 run? Yes. 118k miles on the odometer. About to take it on another 3,000- mile roadtrip next month. It’s been largely problem-free since I bought it last summer.

IS-F is 83.2 per Liter crank.
Crosstour V6 is 77.4 per Liter crank.

Throwing approximate weight values in there,
IS-F is approx 3800 lbs, so ~0.02189 HP per Liter per pound
Crosstour V6 is about 4100 lbs so ~0.01889 HP per Liter per pound.

We could play with numbers all day, I’m down for that.
Both are naturally aspirated.

Edit: we should probably mention NA or FI.
